We made our first trip of the season with Midge! We spent 2 nights at Chalk Creek Campground in Nathrop, CO. We were there June 2 – 4. It is located between Salida and Buena Vista. I’ve lived here for 20+ years, but this was my first trip to this area of Colorado. It is gorgeous!
We stayed on the lower creek level of the campground. It is so nice and shaded down there! The lower sites have water and electric only, no cable, and pretty decent wifi. Originally, they had us in a site right on the creek, but there was no room to put out the awning or use our dog fence. We moved to a site just off the creek and it was great. The creek was really running fast and high so we didn’t get to enjoy it. I am sure later this summer it will be fun to play in. There were only 3-4 other campers set up down there, so it was really quiet. The upper campground is pretty crowded and shade is non existent. They are nice sites, but Midge needs shade! The showers are coin operated (.50 for 3 minutes), but you can get a pretty decent shower for a buck. Dear Husband had trouble getting hot water quickly, so he took a bit longer in the shower. The showers and bathrooms are super nice. The staff is really friendly.
We are insane people and acquired ANOTHER dog the day before we left on this trip. I know. WTH??? Like 3 spoiled rotten wiener dogs isn’t enough. I introduce to you the newest member of our crazy family, Dottie:
Admit it: you would’ve brought her home, too. We adopted her from the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley in Littleton, CO. She comes from an Indian reservation in New Mexico. We are told she is a Wheaten Terrier and Corgi mix. In this picture she was 9 weeks old. She was a great little camper! The weenies are still adjusting to having a puppy around, but they will be fine. Ralphie Rose is the disciplinarian and playmate for her. Nellie and Lucy just try to stay away from her. Some day there will be harmony in our house again. Some. Day.
Here are a couple pics of the dogs and Midge:
My husband built an awesome pull out shelf next to the fridge. Since my Holiday Rambler door project, I have become a Mod Podge queen. I Mod Podged the shelf with some left over curtain fabric. It is actually kind of cute. We now have a proper bar/cocktail area!
The process:
The shelf actually was very convenient and more working counter space is always welcome. Here are a few pics of Midge from the inside……shelf in service 🙂
We spent a day in Salida and driving up to St. Elmo, an old ghost town in the San Isabel National Forest. The River Walk in Salida was covered by the river so we didn’t get to enjoy it, but the dogs really liked getting wet. Especially Dottie!
While driving up to St. Elmo, we checked out a couple National Forest campgrounds. They are so beautiful! We are planning another trip soon and will stay at the Mt. Princeton Campground. The Mt. Princeton Hot Springs look fantastic, too, and we can’t wait to try them out!
On the way home to Englewood we checked out the Kenosha Pass campgrounds, too. They look nice, and we may stay there one night next time we head to the Salida area.
Last week we camped at the Steamboat Springs Campground. We took our big, newer camper and had our 2 boys and 4 dogs with us. We love this campground! We’ve been going there for 10-12 years. We are hoping to get Midge over there this summer. My 2 boys aren’t really boys…they are big strapping young men. I just can’t stop myself from calling them “my boys”. Our little Midge and the Holiday Rambler are just not big enough for all of us! Here is a picture of us from last week. We celebrated Fathers Day around the camp fire, ate great food, and had a blast!
Dottie adjusted well on this trip, too. She is going to be such a great dog!
We all went up to Fish Creek Falls. It is so beautiful. There is still so much water coming down the falls. The power of it is amazing.
WHEW!! That was a long blog post.
We are still planning on taking Midge to the TCT outing in July. Hopefully, we can get several more trips in this summer.
At this point, we don’t have any major projects to work on with the campers. That is a good thing. I will update as trips are scheduled!
