Maiden Voyage with the Holiday Rambler

on April 27, 2014

We had a successful maiden voyage!  We made a quick weekend trip to Garden of The Gods RV Resort in Colorado Springs.  We got down there really fast!  It was kind of nice.  We were set up and walking the dogs by noon!  I will give my review of the campground later.

First of all….it hauled perfectly.  We used Dear Husband’s big boy truck (Chevy 4 door DuraMax), although my Tahoe would have pulled it just fine.  We stopped at Monument, CO for something to eat and a guy stopped and took pictures of it :).   It really is cute.  Granted, Midge has the “WOW!” Factor, but the Holiday Rambler can hold its own in that cat fight.

Here is our camp site, all set up:

The awning went up so easily!  And, I think it’s pretty darn cute.

I think it’s time for a word from my sponsors…….WIENER DOGS!!!

There will be more pictures of “the girls”…..sorry.  They kind of infiltrate every flipping part of my life.  If you love wiener dogs, then YAY!  If not, well….ignore them (like that ever works).

We had a great time in this camper.  Having a dinette AND a sleeping area is really nice.  Midge does not have a dinette and we have to pull the sofa into a bed every night.  She does have a full size bath with a good size shower, sink, vanity and closet.  The Rambler just has a wet bath, meaning the toilet is in the shower and there is no bath sink or vanity.  We have to brush our teeth at the kitchen sink.  The Airstream bathroom wins hands down.  I just love both of my old campers!  The nice thing about having a dinette and pull out bed is that we could just leave the bed made up and still have the dinette to sit at.

The Rambler looks so nice at night.  The birch wood interior just glows.

The dogs cuddled up at the foot of the bed and we all were cozy for the night 🙂

We drove up to Woodland Park one day.  It is a beautiful drive.  The view of Pikes Peak was amazing!

Earlier in the day we went on a hike at Garden Of the Gods Park.  I, unfortunately, did not take any pictures.  It is absolutely beautiful.  If you haven’t been there, you need to go!  We also spent some time in Manitou Springs….again, no photos.  It is a really cute little town.

OK….here are my thoughts on Garden of the Gods RV Resort:

It has a great location and is very convenient to many tourist destinations as well as hiking and biking trails.  For the most part, it is clean and neat.  The pools were not open yet.  The main pool was covered, but looked nice.  The back pool had dirty black water in it and was kind of gross.  The sites are VERY close together.  It seems like most of the people here are workers or long term.  The cable was lame – we had about 6 channels, but we spend most of our time outside, so it wasn’t a big deal.  The wifi worked pretty well.  The problem we had was with the dogs.  They are a “dog friendly” resort…..meaning they accept dogs.  That is about the extent of their dog friendliness.  There is NO GRASS on any of the sites.  They consist of a concrete pad with a picnic table and crushed rock.  The sharp kind.  Our dogs did not want to walk on the rocks.  They stayed on the concrete pad or on our patio rug.  There are 2 areas within the campground with grass:  the small tent area and a small area near the back pool.  Dogs are not allowed on either site.  They boasted about their “Bark Park” when we made our reservation and again when we checked in.  The “Bark Park” is located at the very back of the campground and is a fenced area with, guess what? More concrete and rock!  Look:

Now, I know my dogs are spoiled rotten.  But I think most dogs want to do their business on grass or weeds or even dirt.  The poor things couldn’t go anywhere!  During the day we took them in to town and found a park where they could do their thing.  At about 9:00pm at night we walked them over to where our truck was parked, on some dirt.  We let them off their leashes and let them relieve themselves.  We were both there watching them, picked up their poop, and went back to our site.  The next day we were scolded for not following the rules and letting our dogs run free. I don’t even know how they knew we did it!  So flipping irritating.  We would definitely come back to the area, but will not stay here again.  There are some great looking smaller campgrounds nearby that we will check out.

Even with the dog issues, we had a great first outing with the Holiday Rambler.  Now we just need to plan our next trip!  I am ready to take Midge on the road again.  I felt incredibly guilty leaving her behind.
