Grand Lake, CO: Elk, Moose, Rain, Snow & “Dark Shadows”

on September 30, 2013

Well, we made our trip to Grand Lake last weekend!  It was a beautiful day, and we took our time admiring the scenery.

We stayed at the Elk Creek Campground.  It was a great!  We arrived Thursday afternoon, and the owners could not have been nicer or more accommodating.

As we were sitting outside enjoying the beautiful weather, a family of elk came by!  Not 30′ from us!  It was so cool.  They did not seem too concerned with us.  The male stood careful watch while the doe and babies ate their fill.  It was awesome!  Here are some pics:

The bad weather arrived on Friday.  Rain and snow mix, with a high temperature of 26 degrees!  BRRRRR!  Midge stayed nice and cozy, though. The weenies were not too happy, but they endured it.  We bought “Dark Shadows:  The Haunting of Collinwood” for $5.00 at Walmart and watched about 20 episodes.  It was so bad, it was good if you know what I mean 😉 Cheesy 1960’s soap opera, but the right era for our 1967 Airstream!  P1000730The dogs spent the day under blankets or riding in George’s lap while we drove around Grand Lake.

While Driving around in the crappy weather we saw a Moose Family in the city park.  Right in the middle of down town Grand Lake!

Because of the floods, we did not get to go to Estes Park 😦

We planned on making a day trip to Estes Park taking Trail Ridge Road from Grand Lake, but unfortunately, Trail Ridge Road was closed due to snow.  Bummer for us, but we did get to drive about 10 miles in to Rocky Mountain National Park before they turned us around.  The fall colors were just beginning to turn, so we didn’t get to see the peak colors.  I did get a few gorgeous pics, though:

We made it back home safe and sound.  Sunday traffic on I-70 was not too bad!   The fall colors should be perfect in a few days.  I wish we were camping this weekend again! Now we are looking forward to our trip to Tulsa, OK for Oktoberfest in a couple weeks!
